Certificate of Upstream Bioprocessing (3 Days)

The course is aimed at early career professionals and anyone who wants to develop an understanding of upstream bio-manufacturing techniques and processes.

This 3-day course consists of 6 lectures, enhanced with practical demonstrations using bench-scale, pilot-scale, and single-use bioreactors. In particular, attendees will gain hands-on fermentation experience using a 30L-scale, stainless steel stirred tank bioreactor. The course includes the set-up, steam sterilisation in place (SIP), inoculation, monitoring and harvest of a 30L yeast fermentation.

On completion of the course, the attendees will be presented with a ‘Certificate of Upstream Bioprocessing’ issued by IBioIC.

Learning outcomes

  • Obtain an up-to-date overview of microbial and mammalian cell cultivation in the field of bio-manufacturing.

  • Know the considerations and possible challenges of upstream bioprocessing scale-up.

  • Be aware of various cell types, cell metabolism, fermentation modes and bioreactor types.

  • Be aware of the importance of preparation, sterilisation, monitoring and quality control of fermentation process.

  • Develop hands-on fermentation skills through practical experience using a stainless-steel pilot bioreactor.

  • Familiarise with sampling techniques used in fermentation and biomass quantification methods.

Mastering Protein Purification using Chromatography Techniques (3 Days)

The course is aimed at anyone who wants to develop an understanding of theory and techniques in protein purification using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) on an AKTA Avant. This training course will also focus on AKTA maintenance and cleaning, and the applications of using FPLC.   

The 3-day course consists of lectures, practical demos and hands-on exercises, and is hosted by Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC). Trainees will be issued a Certificate of Completion of the training by IBioIC.

Learning outcomes:

  •  Understand the theory behind protein purification techniques

  • Be aware of the applications of protein purification

  • Purify green fluorescent protein (GFP) using hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC)

  • Learn how an AKTA system works, how to prepare for a chromatography run, and how to ensure your AKTA system remains clean

  • Understand the importance of good column packing

Advanced Downstream Bioprocessing: From Harvest to Purity (3 Days)

This 3-day hands-on training course is designed for professionals and researchers looking to develop expertise in downstream bioprocessing, covering key techniques such as Disc-stack Centrifugation, High-pressure Homogenization, Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF), and Chromatography. Participants will gain a strong theoretical foundation along with practical experience in operating industry-relevant equipment, optimizing process parameters, and troubleshooting common challenges.

The course includes lectures, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises hosted by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC). By the end of the training, attendees will have the skills and confidence to apply downstream processing techniques in real-world bioprocessing applications. A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful participation.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand key downstream processing techniques: Disc Stack Centrifugation, High-pressure Homogenization, Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) and Chromatography

  • Gain hands-on experience in operating lab-scale equipment for each downstream processing technique and learn how to optimize key process parameters.

Pilot-Scale Upstream Bioprocessing: 300L Bioreactor training (4 Days)

This 4-day intensive training course is designed for professionals and researchers looking to advance their expertise in large-scale upstream bioprocessing, with a focus on scale-up to 300 L pilot-scale operations. Participants will explore the principles and practical steps involved in scaling microbial cell culture to production-relevant volumes, supported by expert-led lectures, live demonstrations, and hands-on training.

Key topics include process design and parameter translation, bioreactor preparation, sterilisation protocols, inoculation procedures, online monitoring, and harvest strategies. Hosted by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC), this course offers participants the opportunity to operate a 300 L stainless steel stirred-tank bioreactor, providing practical experience that bridges laboratory knowledge with industrial application.

Upon completion, attendees will have the technical skills and confidence to manage upstream processes at pilot scale. A certificate of completion will be awarded to all successful participants.

This 5-day comprehensive training course offers an end-to-end exploration of the biomanufacturing process, integrating both upstream and downstream operations into a unified, hands-on learning experience. Participants will begin by cultivating a recombinant protein using a microbial expression system in a 30 L stainless steel stirred-tank bioreactor, gaining direct experience in bioreactor setup, sterilisation, inoculation, monitoring, and harvest procedures.

The course then transitions to downstream processing, where participants will apply industry-relevant techniques including disc-stack centrifugation, high-pressure homogenisation, tangential flow filtration (TFF), and chromatography to recover and purify the expressed protein. Applied Skills in Mammalian Cell Bioprocessing (3 Days)

This 3-day hands-on training course is designed for individuals seeking to build core competencies in the cultivation and handling of mammalian cell lines within a controlled bioprocessing environment. Blending classroom-based theory with practical lab sessions, the course offers detailed exposure to the essential techniques and challenges associated with mammalian cell culture in bioreactors up to 1.5 L scale.

Participants will gain experience in cell line maintenance, media preparation, aseptic technique, and bioreactor operation—including inoculation, parameter control, viability monitoring, and contamination prevention. This training provides a strong foundation in mammalian bioprocessing, equipping attendees with the skills necessary for application in a biomanufacturing context. A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful participation.
